Abstract | Metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) supported on doped-carbon materials have attracted extensive attention for the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR); however, dopant-free carbon supported metal SACs are rather scarcely studied because they are expected to aggregate under harsh catalytic conditions. In this work, we report the successful synthesis of porous carbon-anchored cobalt SACs. The atomic dispersion of the as-synthesized catalyst is confirmed by high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure spectra. This atomically dispersed catalyst is identified to be in a Co-C-4 structure with weakly adsorbed O-2 molecules under ambient conditions. It exhibits remarkable reaction activity and superb stability toward the ORR reaction, with the Co-C-4 units being the active sites. Theoretical calculations unravel that the stability of the Co-C-4 unit is reinforced by the d-p hybridization between Co and coordinated C atoms that allows for substantial charge transfer from Co to C. This work may offer new insights into rational design and synthesis of carbon-based metal SACs for electrochemical applications. |
