Kinetic Control of High-Pressure Phase Transition: A Case Study on alpha p-Nitrophenol

AbstractThe response of a polymorph of p-nitrophenol (C6H5NO3, PNP) to high pressure is reported using in situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, with a pressure of about 10 GPa. According to the experimental results, alpha-PNP transformed to a new polymorph. at a pressure of 1.2 GPa. Upon the release of pressure, the transition was irreversible, and a quenched sample remained in the beta form. The alpha ->gamma transition can be suppressed by rapidly overshooting the corresponding transition pressure. A detailed mechanism of the phase transition and the stability of the polymorphs is discussed by taking molecular stacking into account. This study provides insights into how pressure effectively controls multiple polymorph structures and helps improve the current understanding of the nature of hydrogen bonds as well as kinetic processes under pressure.
