Growth and optimized scintillation properties of Ce: Li6Lu1-xYx(BO3)(3) mixed crystals

AbstractCe: Li6Lu1-xYx(BO3)(3) (x = 0.08, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) mixed crystals were grown by Czochralski method to optimize the scintillation properties of lithium rare earth borate crystals for thermal neutron detection. The crystal structure of the mixed compounds belonged to the monoclinic system with space group P2(1)/c. Their density decreased with the increasing yttrium content from 3.44 to 2.77 g/cm(3). Their degree of supercooling ranges from 135.3 to 119.2 degrees. The X-ray induced luminescence spectra present a double peaked emission bands with a maximum at 380 and 410 nm corresponding to 5d(1) to F-2(5/2) and F-2(7/2) transitions of Ce3+ ions. The photoluminescence decay times are below 36 ns. Ce: Li6Lu0.8Y0.2(BO3)(3) had the best light output under the excitation of alpha particles and gamma rays, and from that point of view is the most promising lithium rare earth borate fast scintillator for thermal neutron detection.
