A high-resolution BaF(2) positron lifetime spectrometer with high counting rate

AbstractA positron lifetime spectrometer with high-resolution and high counting rate is introduced. It consists of BaF(2) scintillators coupled with photomultipliers HAMAMATSU R3377, constant fraction discriminator ORTFC 935 and a fast-slow coincidence system composed of conventional NIM modules. The detector of stop channel with a well-type BaF(2) scintillator detects the sum of 0.511 MeV gamma-ray radiation pair as stop signal. The time resolution of 107.5 ps full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) with (60)Co source is achieved when using a small size (Phi30 mm x 10 mm) of BaF(2) scintillator. The time resolution of 145 ps FWHM with (60)Co source is obtained when using a large size (Phi40 mm x 30 mm) scintillator while the counting rate is up to 34 cps/muCi (similar to920 cps/MBq).
